Prospective Students
About Us: We are always looking for
highly qualified students, who are interested in obtaining a M.S. or a Ph.D. in
Engineering Mechanics or Aerospace Engineering. Specializations include basic
wind-structure interaction problems and wind engineering with a focus on wind
tunnel model testing and applications of computational fluid dynamics,
mathematical and statistical tools such as system identification methods, and
wavelet and spectral techniques applied to this class of problems. To
participate in this research effort, you should be interested in structures
(civil, aerospace and mechanical), aerodynamics, and wind tunnel experiments.
Please see the
Research
page for a list of our ongoing sponsored
Projects
and Publications. Also, see our
Academics
page for the list of thesis or dissertation topics that our graduate students
have been pursuing.
Work Environment: Graduate students in our research group
work in a modern, well-equipped building, the new
Howe Hall, Engineering Teaching and
Research Complex. The various facilities that
are available to graduate students in our research group are described on the
Facilities page.Curriculum: While at Iowa State,
you will take courses from the Engineering Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering
graduate programs as well as courses outside the department that will depend
upon your research topic. Typical courses within the department are on wind
engineering, signal processing, vibrations, aeroelasticty, experimental and
advanced solid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics and finite element
analysis, whereas typical courses outside the department include structural
engineering, advanced mathematics, statistics and atmospheric sciences. To see
the catalog description of the courses offered by our department, go to the
Aerospace Department's
Graduate Program.
Living in Ames: You will find that community life in Ames
is quite pleasant. Ames is a community of about 50,000 located in central Iowa.
Despite having a slow paced and relaxed environment, Ames boasts a fine array of
cultural activities and entertainment facilities, including the
Iowa State Center.
Ames has been named the second most livable small city in the nation by the New
Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities, and provides a true taste of
Midwestern life and hospitality.
