Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Civil Engineering Wilson Endowed Chair, Director of WiST Laboratory Background: His academic pursuit has been to develop new analytical and experimental techniques that can be applied to aerodynamic problems of civil engineering and aerospace structures. He has been involved in the design of a couple of closed-circuit wind tunnels and the world’s first tornado/microburst simulator that can be used for model studies. He taught in the department of civil engineering at Texas Tech University (1992-2000) where he was associated with the Wind Science and Engineering Center before moving to Iowa State University. He has more than 15 years of research experience and he has published more than 60 articles in his subject areas of interest. He also holds three U.S. patents on methods to mitigate wind effects. Research Interests: Wind engineering; wind tunnel and full scale testing; aerodynamics of buildings, long-span bridges and other flexible structures; basic aerodynamics and aeroelasticity; system identification.
Assistant Professor, Aerospace Engineering Background: His academic pursuits have included wind engineering and the employment of aerodynamics analysis tools to improve the wind resistance of buildings and structures. Specifically, this has involved the simulation of non-stationary extreme wind events and their effects on structures and the development of a Design/Test Environment where new ideas in wind resistance can be developed and tested. He served as visiting faculty at the University of Notre Dame before joining the Iowa State faculty in 2001. Research Interests: Wind engineering, experimental bluff-body aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, discrete vortex simulation, long-span bridge aerodynamics, structural dynamics
Professor, Geological and Atmospheric Sciences Background: His primary academic interests are directed toward improved forecasting of storm-scale and mesoscale meteorological events, with an emphasis on numerical simulation of thunderstorm systems. He was a visiting post-doctoral scientist at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction where he worked on a nonhydrostatic version of the National Weather Service’s primary mesoscale forecasting model before coming to Iowa State University in 1995. Research Interests: Fine-scale numerical weather prediction, mesoscale convective system dynamics, heavy precipitation events, use of innovative technology in geoscience education. Staff
